EQUALITY FOR ULSTER-SCOTS PROGRESSED BY DUP
During Oral Questions at the Northern Ireland Assembly this afternoon, East Antrim MLA Alastair Ross asked Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Gregory Campbell about his assessment on achieving equality between Irish and Ulster-Scots funding, and if the gap has been closed over recent years.
Commenting from Parliament Buildings, Mr Ross said,
“There is a proud Ulster-Scots heritage in my own East Antrim constituency, and two very successful Ulster-Scots groups in Cairncastle and Ballycarry. Sadly over the years government money flowed to Irish language groups at the cost of Ulster-Scots groups, but thankfully since the DUP took office things have begun to change.
The Culture, Arts and Leisure Minister Gregory Campbell this afternoon confirmed during Oral Questions at Stormont that there has been in recent years a doubling of funding going to Ulster-Scots organisations, and that this trend will continue as long as the DUP control the department.
Clearly Irish language organisations are better established and have been around longer than many of the Ulster-Scots organisations, and so Ulster-Scots needs additional funding and support in order to achieve parity and equality between the two traditions.”
