ROSS PRESSES EMPEY ON MERGER CONCERNS
East Antrim MLA Alastair Ross today pressed the Employment and Learning Minister on concerns about job losses which could stem directly from the proposed merger between Stranmillis College and Queens University Belfast.
Speaking from Parliament Buildings, Mr Ross said,
“The proposed merger between Stranmillis and Queens University has created much debate and controversy over the past year, and quite rightly there are a number of concerns that are emerging as we learn more about the proposals.
I have been contacted by a number of constituents who have expressed their concerns that, despite assurances to Stranmillis staff by their governing body, the Queens University new academic plan for the next three years could potentially result in up to 150 redundancies among academic staff.
This is clearly very concerning for those who could be impacted, and in these uncertain economic times is potentially devastating news. It is disappointing that the Minister could not give any assurances to me or the House in the chamber this afternoon, but it is important that as more details emerge from the proposed merger that they are scrutinised in fine detail to ensure that the best interests of all parties are safeguarded in the long term.”
