ROSS COMMENTS ON PRESIDENTIAL OUTCOME

Democratic Unionist MLA Alastair Ross has commented this morning on the election of Barack Obama as President elect of the United States of America.

Mr Ross said,

Congratulations must go to Mr Obama on his election win last night, but what is important for people in Northern Ireland is that Barack Obama will be a fair and balanced President in his dealings with Northern Ireland. President Bush may have his critics, but his Whitehouse was a much better place for Unionists than his predecessors was.”

Mr Ross went on,

The difference between the Bush Administration and the previous Clinton era was radically different. Whilst the Clinton Administration adopted an overtly green/nationalist approach in dealing with Northern Ireland, the Bush Administration has been much more even-handed and balanced.

I welcomed that fact that both candidates intended to maintain a Special Envoy to Northern Ireland. The DUP has been working hard to attract US investment and support for Northern Ireland and we would engage fully with any Special Envoy appointed by the new President to further that job-creating and prosperity building agenda.”
